Spending My Time

Notes

Marie: This is a song I always love to perform. I do it without the band, just me by the piano. Bittersweet and melancholic. It holds up very well through the years. Per: Written the same day as “Joyride”, would you believe that? I think the lyrics are what really makes this song work. It’s like a day full of thoughts… but I never thought the melody matched the words really. Still I believed this was going to be our biggest hit ever, which might have happened if not our American record company had fired a lot of… ah, never mind. It’s a big song for us, anyway. Marie: It’s got class. Per: The way Marie sings this song makes me proud of being part of this band.

– Don’t Bore Us – Get to the Chorus! liner notes, 1995

By 1990, Roxette were worldwide superstars. But would they last? Written the same day as hit single Joyride, “Spending My Time” helped boost confidence in the group’s ability to follow the multi-million success of Look Sharp!. A live classic, the song is now mostly performed by Marie solo at the piano.

– The Ballad Hits liner notes, 2002

Per: Recorded May 24, 1990 at Tits & Ass. I knew we had a great song (MP and I wrote this one together) but the demo always sucked!!! I couldn’t sing it very well, I don’t know why. It was always meant for Marie. She did a tremendous job delivering it. I’m sure it would have become a Top 5 song in he US if EMI wouldn’t have scrapped the entire company and sacked 122 people in the middle of marketing this one. People loved it but radio never got the chance to catch up. The Music Business. You win some, you lose some.

Roxette – Original Version 4:39

What’s the time?
Seems it’s already morning
I see the sky it’s so beautiful and blue
The TV’s on
But the only thing showing is a picture of you

Oh I get up and make myself some coffee
I try to read a bit but the story’s too thin
I thank the Lord above
That you’re not here to see me
In this shape I’m in

Spending my time
Watching the days go by
Feeling so small I stare at the wall
Hoping that you think of me too
I’m spending my time

I try to call
But I don’t know what to tell you
I leave a kiss on your answering machine
Oh help me please
Is there someone who can make me
Wake up from this dream?

Spending my time
Watching the days go by
Feeling so small I stare at the wall
Hoping that you are missing me too
I’m spending my time

Spending my time
Watching the sun go down
I fall asleep to the sound of “Tears of a Clown”
A prayer gone blind
I’m spending my time

My friends keep telling me:
“Hey, life will go on
Time will make sure I get over you
This silly game of love –
You play, you win only to lose”

Spending my time
Watching the days go by
Feeling so small
I stare at the wall
Hoping that you think of me too
I’m spending my time

Spending my time
Watching the sun go down
I fall asleep to the sound of “Tears of a Clown”
A prayer gone blind
I’m spending my time

Roxette – Un día sin tí [Original Version] 4:38

¿Qué hora es?
Bienvenida la mañana
Tan sola yo y el cielo tan azul
En mi café
En mi radio y en mi tele
Siempre estás tú

Para empezar
Me levanto de la cama y voy
Vistiéndome así como así
Gracias a Dios
Tú no puedes verme llorando por tí

Un día sin tí
Es una eternidad
Es un adiós que duele por dos
Solo esperar
La soledad
Un día sin tí

Busco tu voz

Oh…
Me niego a ser tu amor a cambio de un día sin tí

Un día sin tí
Es una eternidad
Es un adiós que duele por dos
Solo esperar un día sin tí
Un día sin tí
Sin tí
Es una eternidad
Es un adiós que duele por dos
Es una pena
Un día sin tí
Un día sin tí
Sin tí
