Notes

Per: Written for a Bette Midler-movie, but ended up in the Super Mario Bros.-flop instead. We thought it was cool to have a song in that movie, because we both liked Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins. Marie: But that was before we saw the movie. Per: I still like the song in a way… but if you wanted to make a parody of Roxette, it would probably sound something like this. Marie: Not one of our most inspired moments. Per: Right, no big surprises here. Recorded in England and charted best there. That was a bit of surprise, though. Marie: I was nine months pregnant when I recorded the vocals. Per: That’s no surprise.

Recorded for inclusion in a Bette Midler movie, this cheery piece of whimsical psychedelia instead found its way into the Super Mario Bros. film, starring Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper. A major hit in England and most European countries, although some hocus-pocus prevented the film from becoming the expected blockbuster it was designed to be. “The verse is cute”, is the humble comment from the Rox camp.

– The Ballad Hits liner notes, 2002

Per: Roxette got a request to make the theme song for a Bette Midler-movie called Hocus Pocus back in 1993. So I wrote this one and did the demo with MP at the Tits & Ass palace in Halmstad. But suddenly the US girlband En Vogue got involved in the HP-project and did the main song instead. So we withdrew and found ourselves with a finished track (most of it recorded in London) but no movie. Someone suggested we should try to get it into the Dennis Hopper/Bob Hoskins-film Super Mario Bros. which I thought was a so-so idea but hey… I’m from Furet… Anyway, we got there… and the film turned out to be ridiculous (so thought Dennis Hopper by the way… I met him at a Formula 1 race many years ago discussing this…) but the song isn’t that bad… We changed the title to “Almost Unreal” to get rid of the Hocus Pocus-connection. I think it was quite big in the UK. Or maybe it was Greenland.

Roxette – Almost Unreal [Original Version] 3:58

Babe, come in from the cold
And put that coat to rest
Step inside
Take a deep breath
And do what you do best

Yeah, kick off them shoes
And leave those city streets
I do believe love came our way
And fate did arrange for us to meet

I love when you do that hocus pocus to me
The way that you touch
You’ve got the power to heal
You give me that look
It’s almost unreal
It’s almost unreal

Hey, we can’t stop the rain
Let’s find a place by the fire
Sometimes I feel
Strange as it seems
You’ve been in my dreams all my life

I love when you do that hocus pocus to me
The way that you touch
You’ve got the power to heal
You give me that look
It’s almost unreal
It’s almost unreal

It’s a crazy world out there
Let’s hope our prayers are in good hands tonight
