The Look

Notes

Marie: This is still one of my all time favorites, maybe the best thing we’ve ever done – seven years old and it sticks out as much now as it did then. Per: Our first American #1 and of course the Big Break. It topped the charts in some 30 countries but at the time I just thought it was a throwaway. Marie: I couldn’t sing it, it suited Per perfectly. But he didn’t believe in himself as a singer in those days. Per: I always thought that we should promote the songs Marie sang. They were all written for her anyway, but some of them didn’t suit her style. I mean, the whole idea behind Roxette was me writing clever songs and Marie singing like a goddess and together we’d conquer the world. Me being a lead singer wasn’t part of that plan, not for me anyway. Marie: Proves that a great pop songs more about personality and attitude than just singing technically good. Per: Thank you. Marie: After the first studio playback of “The Look!” I said: “here’s our #1 hit in the States”, which was just a wet dream for a Swedish band. Per: “Walking like a man, hitting like a hammer”… the first two verses are guide lyrics, words just scribbled down to have something to sing. Couldn’t come up with anything better, so we kept them. Everybody gets lucky sometimes…

– Don’t Bore Us – Get to the Chorus! liner notes, 1995

The throwaway pop tune with the guide lyrics that kicked the door open and topped the charts in 33 countries. It all started in the USA, despite their American record company’s initial refusal to sign the band. In February 1989 an exchange student brought the Look Sharp! CD to the Minneapolis radio station KDWB, they started to play “The Look”. From there it spread on 500 cassette copies to radio stations all over the country. The record company rush-released the song, it quickly hit the #1 spot on the Billboard chart and the ball was rolling.

Per: I was trying to mix a “dance-vibe” with powerful guitars. A little bit like ZZ Top a la “Gimme All Your Lovin’”. It was written for Marie but it sounded terrible when she tried it out. She needs “bigger” melodies so you can hear her fab voice properly! We always, by instinct, went for singles where Marie did the lead vox. When we heard about the airplay in the US we instantly thought it was “Dressed for Success” or “Listen to Your Heart” that started to happen. Big surprise to all of us that it was “The Look”. Badabam!

Roxette – Original Version 3:56

1-2-3-4 walking like a man
Hitting like a hammer
She’s a juvenile scam
Never was a quitter
Tasty like a raindrop
She’s got the look

Heavenly bound
Cause heaven’s got a number
When she’s spinning me around
Kissing is a color
Her loving is a wild dog
She’s got the look

She’s got the look
She’s got the look
What in the world can make a brown-eyed girl turn blue
When everything I’ll ever do
I’ll do for you and I go
La la la la la
She’s got the look

Fire in the ice
Naked to the t-bone
Is a lover’s disguise
Banging on the head drum
Shaking like a mad bull
She’s got the look

Swaying to the band
Moving like a hammer
She’s a miracle man
Loving is the ocean
Kissing is the wet sand
She’s got the look

And she goes: na na na na na na na na
